Kaua’i County encompasses the islands of Ka’ula, Lehua, Ni’i’hua and Kaua’i. The Gardens are considered one of the most visually stunning offerings in all of Hawaii. Outdoor activities, which are favored by the locals are snorkeling, surfing, and swimming. The calm rivers of the county also make kayoing and canoeing popular pastimes.

Veterans in Kaua’i County
Kaua’i County is the home of just over 5,000 veterans. The Office of Veterans Services Hawaii operates a satellite facility in Lihue. This facility helps veterans, active military, spouses and dependents with military benefits and entitlements. The office specializes in claims preparation, acts as Governors Liaison to veterans, maintains discharge documents, reviews service records and validates service credit for the State Employees Retirement System. The office also assists with burials for veterans and refers veterans to other agencies.
The Kaua’i Vet Center in Lihue offers counseling and adjustment for struggling veterans. The center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The office works to better serve veterans and their family members by providing services after working hours and on the weekends if it is specifically requested.
Health and wellness services are also provided to local veterans at the Kaua’i Community-Based Outpatient Clinic in Lihue. The clinic provides primary health care to veterans who suffer from stable chronic health issues or minor acute illnesses.
The county is the site of The Barking Sands Missile Range. Considered one of the most important military facilities operated by the Navy, the facility includes a military base and an airfield. Because of its relative isolation, tests and training exercises are conducted year-round. The facility is the largest instrumented, multi-dimensional training range in the world.
Disabled veteran homeowners in Kaua’I County, who suffer from a total disability, qualify for a property tax exemption of $5,000. Additionally, the state of Hawaii will cover expenses of up to $5,000 for the construction of greater disability access on a disabled owner-occupied home.
