Jones County was officially created on December 10, 1807, and was named for U.S. Representative, James Jones. Jones County was made from a portion of Baldwin County. The county is made up of 394 square miles of land and 1.5 square miles of water. Jones County has a strong school system and several medical facilities. The current population of the county is 28,787, including a veteran population of 1,774.
The Ocmulgee River flows through Jones County. The river makes Jones County a great place for fishing, boating, and many other water activities. Many diverse species of wildlife make their home in and around the Ocmulgee River. Avid bird watchers and nature lovers will love spending a day at the river. Spotted bass, white crappie, yellow perch, and longear sunfish are all known to live in the Ocmulgee River.

Many of the most interesting species of animals in Georgia can be found in the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge. There are many clear streams and beaver ponds in the refuge, which make it an excellent location for a relaxing walk in the woods.
Jones County has a strong school system. The school system is made up of six elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. The schools all have excellent teachers and many after school programs for children to enjoy.
Jones County has its own veterans’ committee that plans celebrations honoring those who have served in the military.
