Located on the Florida Panhandle as part of the Metropolitan Statistical Area of Tallahassee, Jefferson County has a population of 14,761. The county seat and largest city is Monticello. Known for its historic 1800’s opera house that is still functional, Monticello has a rich local culture, rooted in the early days of this country. In addition to the Perkins Opera House, the Monticello Old Jail Museum offers spectators a window into the past. Differing from Thomas Jefferson’s (the county’s namesake) Virginia Hometown of Monticello, Monticello Florida is pronounced mont-i-SEL-o. The County has a humid subtropical climate with sunny, humid summers and mild winters. The county’s area of 637 square miles includes the Aucilla River, Lake Miccosukee, Wacissa River and the nationally protected area of St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. Among the oldest wildlife refuges in the United States, St. Marks is a gateway site for the Great Florida Birding Trail.

The county is extremely diverse racially and politically favors the Democratic Party. In the previous four elections Jefferson County has voted Democrat, a distinction that only a few of the counties along the panhandle share. An athletic powerhouse, the Jefferson County Tigers, was the 2012 champion of Florida high school football. Of the seven counties adjacent to Jefferson County, three are situated in the state of Georgia. The county is the only in the state to border both Georgia and the Gulf of Mexico. The county was originally established in 1827.
