Close to several larger cities, including Chicago, the county has all the amenities you need close by. The county was created from a portion of Vermillion County on February 26, 1833. Made up of primarily wetlands and prairies, the Iroquois County State Wildlife Area is an excellent place for exploring. Some of the species that make their home in the Iroquois County State Wildlife Area include prairie chicken and beavers.

Be sure visit the river from which Iroquois County gets its name, the Iroquois River. A tributary of the Kankakee River, the Iroquois River is the perfect spot to take a canoe or raft for a relaxing float.  Be sure to bring your fishing pole and enjoy some of the excellent fishing opportunities offered at the Iroquois River. The river offers excellent views of the surrounding towns. There are several areas great for hiking and biking around the Iroquois River. If you enjoy camping, take advantage of the many great spots for camping along the shores.

History buffs need to make sure they visit one or all of the Nationally Registered Historic Places located in Iroquois County. The Prairie Dell Meetinghouse is a church that has been standing in Iroquois County since the 1800s. Prairie Dell features Greek Revival architecture and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 12, 2005. The Old Iroquois Courthouse has also been in Iroquois County since the 1800s. Other historical places in Iroquois County include St. Mary’s Church and the Watseka Union Depot.
