With an area of 1,017 square miles, Highlands County is the 14th biggest county by size in the state of Florida. Located in the mid-southern portion of the state, the county consists of less than 100 square miles of water. The county’s largest lake connects to the Kissimmee River, and Lake Istokpoga also borders the area. Formed in 1921, the county was carved out of DeSoto County along with Charlotee, Glades and Hardee counties. Highlands County has a population of 98,786. The county population has the distinction of being the fifth-oldest population in the United States. Sebring is both the largest city and the county seat. Nicknamed “The City on the Circle”, Sebring has a historical downtown district, featuring 22 historical buildings, restaurants and bars; The Sebring International Raceway, one of the oldest race tracks in the country and host of the 12 Hours of Sebring event. Veterans in Highlands County
Highlands County is the site of the Avon Park Air Force Range. The bombing range and air-ground training complex is also known as the MacDill Air Force Base Auxiliary Field. The facility is the main air-to-ground-training range for the 482nd Fight Wing. Major units assigned to the complex included the 336thm 397th and 88th Bombardment Groups. Because operations have been drastically scaled down over the years, a three-blade propeller memorial was built next to the administration building in tribute to military members who have served through this facility.
Highlands County is home to almost 10,000 veteran residents. These residents have access to the Sebring Community Based Outpatient Clinic. The clinic provides primary care, mental health care, referrals, social work, EKG Service among other wellness offerings.
Veteran homeowners in Florida might qualify for a property tax exemption if they suffered a service-related injury that has left them with a disability rating of ten percent or greater.
