Geographically situated in mid-Florida, adjacent to Sumter County, Pasco County and Citrus County, Hernando County was established in 1843. Interestingly, the county pre-dates Florida being named a state by two years. The county was developed around Fort DeSota, a military installation that served as a buffer between settlers and natives. The county, similar to Desoto County is named after Spanish Explorer Hernando de Soto. The explorer is famed for leading a sixteenth century expedition through Florida. For six years (1844-1850) the county changed its name to Benton County. Today, Hernando County has a population of 174,441. The largest community in the county is Spring Hill, and the county seat is Brooksville. The area of the county encompasses 473 square miles of land and 116 square miles of water. The county is home to both the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge and the state protected Weeki Wachee Springs Withalacooche State Forest. Points of interest in the county include the Croom Motorcycle Park, an area that has miles of trails dedicated exclusively to motorcycle and ATV riders; Brooksville Railroad Depot Museum, Bayport Park and the Annuteliga Hammock Park and preserve.
