Formed in 1923, Hendry County is located in the southern portion of Florida. The climate of the county is characterized as humid subtropical. Similar to the rest of Southern Florida, the winters are cool, yet mild, and the summers are hot and humid. The county has a total population of 39,140, with the largest city being Clewiston. The county seat is LaBelle. Clewiston is home to both the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum, which celebrates the history of the Seminole Tribe, and the Clewiston Museum, which exhibits local histories such as fossils and cattle industry artifacts. Originally a fishing camp, Clewiston developed into a large sugar and agricultural producer. The motto of the city is “America’s Sweetest Town.” Perhaps the most prominent annual event in the county is the Swamp Cabbage Festival which occurs in Labelle, This event features a 5k, beauty pageant and rodeo in celebration of the state tree of Florida, the cabbage palm. A fairly split county politically by registration; Hendry County has voted Republican during the past four presidential cycles.
The county is named for Francis Hendry, a famed Confederate Army General, politician, and cattle rancher.
