The site of the Springfield Armory, the main center of military firearms manufacturing from the Revolutionary War through War in Vietnam, Hampden County has a long and storied relationship with the American Armed Forces. The Armory became the focus of national attention in the 1780’s as the location of Shays’ Rebellion.
Hampden County has a fairly large veteran population of more than 30,000. Because the county government was absolved in the 1990’s, many functions of government are carried out via state agencies or by the local government of each specific community.
The majority of veterans in the county reside in Springfield. These veterans are advocated for by the Springfield Office of Veterans Services. This department maintains a commit of assisting veterans in the following areas:

Additional wellness and healthcare services are provided to local veterans by the Springfield Vet Center, and the Springfield Community Based Outpatient Clinic.

Medical services provided at the facility include primary care, dermatology, urology, orthopedics, women’s health, neurology, nutrition, respiratory clinic and home care. Additionally, the clinic works treats existing chronic, non-emergency conditions and provides immunizations. For medical issues that cannot be treated at the clinic, patients are referred to the Northampton VA Medical Center in Hampshire County.
Mental health services provided include diagnostic evaluation, individual and group therapy, and family psychotherapy. The clinic specializes in treating PTSD and substance abuse related issues. The clinic also gives referrals to other community resources and inpatient treatment options.
The Springfield Vet Center is an additional option for veterans in need of readjustment counseling. The vet center is located in West Springfield and holds hours Monday through Friday. The facility works with veterans and their families facing substance abuse, PTSD and other trauma related issues. In the attempt to better serve former members of the military, the facility will stay open after normal hours upon specific request.
Hampden County is the site of the Westover Air Reserve Base. The base is the biggest Air Reserve Base in the United States of America. The base is used for maintenance operations and storage of the militaries heaviest aircrafts. The long runways onsite are extremely advantageous, and the most important units housed at the base are the 439-th Airlift Wing, the 4-th Air Force, and the 302-nd Combat Support Brigade.
Disabled veterans who own property in Hampden County are entitled to a property tax exemption under multiple circumstances. If a veteran has a disability rating of ten percent, they are entitled to an exemption of $400. If a veteran has lost the functionality of one eye, arm or foot they are entitled to an exemption of $750. If the veteran has lost the functionality of both hands, eyes or feet they are entitled to an exemption of $1,250.
