Named after founding father and U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, Hamilton County is located in lowlands of Northern Florida. West of Jacksonville by 80 miles, east of Tallahassee by 90 miles, south of Valdosta Georgia by 30 miles and north of Lake City by 30 miles, the county is in an idyllic location, close to all that is offered in big cities, but far enough away to escape the negative aspects of major metropolitan areas. The climate features 225 sunny days a year. Made up of over 500 square miles with roughly 15,000 residents, the county is bordered by Echols, Columbia and Madison County. Among the older counties of Florida, Hamilton was originally founded in 1827, from land belonging to Jefferson County.
The majority of county residents make their home in the county seat of Jasper, a phosphate mining hub. Since the inception of the county, the local economy has undergone numerous shifts. Originally dominated by cotton, and then by tobacco, turpentine and lumber, 17 percent of residents work in the production and material moving industry today. The majority of locals work in retail with a small but robust number maintaining an occupation centered in farming, forestry and fishing.
Since 2,000, Hamilton County has undergone a population boom. The eleven percent growth in populous has been attributed to affordable housing options coupled with the cost of living almost 20 percent lesser than that of the national average. The average home cost in Hamilton is $72,000, and the median family income is over $48,000.
A diverse area, the demographic breakdown of Hamilton County, is approximately 60 percent white, 30 percent Black, and 9 percent Hispanic.
