Named for the editor of the Atlanta Constitution, Henry W. Grady, Grady County was created on August 17, 1905. Historical landmarks and natural views give Grady County a flavor all its own. Grady County has a sweet history. The county seat of Cairo is nicknamed the “Syrup City.” In the early 1900s, Cairo produced a great amount of cane sugar. The high school football team’s mascot is the “Syrup Maker.”
Tired Creek Lake is one of the best places to enjoy a day out fishing. The lake is 960 acres large and is home to many different types of fish. Tired Creek Lake is also a great location for swimming, boating, and much more! Hunting is another popular activity in Grady County.
Education is very important to the community of Grady County. There is a thriving school system composed of five elementary schools, a middle school, and high school. The South West Georgia Tech campus is located in Grady County. The campus offers convenience for residents that cannot make the drive to the main campus in Thomasville, Ga.
Grady County hosts many local festivals that are fun for people of all ages. The Annual Antique Car Rally brings in amazing cars from all over Georgia. Viewers get the chance to see the interiors and exteriors of many different cars. The car show also includes many activities, including a poker run, a parade, and a street dance. Other festivals held in Grady County include Calvary’s Mule Day and Whigham’s Rattlesnake Roundup.
There is an American Legion post located in Cairo. The Grady County courthouse also houses a Memorial Log, which features the names of all Grady County citizens who have served in the military. Disabled veterans may be eligible for property tax exemption.
