Home to Greenfield Community College, the Franklin County Fair, and Pioneer Valley Symphony Orchestra, Franklin County embodies the ideals of small town American while simultaneously offering residents a smattering of cultural pursuits and entertainment venues.  Historic Main Street in Greenfield is a beautiful reminder of an America forgotten with the passage of time. The area proudly displays examples of Greek Revival, Federal, and Victorian architecture.

Located in North Western Massachusetts, Franklin County was formed in 1811. Named after Benjamin Franklin, the county dissolved its local government in the late 1990’s. On the border of both Vermont and New Hampshire, Franklin is in the statistical area of Springfield. The climate of the county is temperate cool. Summers are warm and winters are cold, with high levels of year-round precipitation. The county has a population of just over 70,000, making it the third least heavily populated county in the state. Adding to the esthetic of the county are the protected areas that fall within its borders. The Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge and Paul C. Jones Working Forest around Brush Mountain in Northfield are highly visible.

Veterans in Franklin County

With a population of roughly 6,000 veterans, Franklin County has the third smallest populous of former military members out of the 14 Massachusetts Counties. Because the county, similar to many of the other counties of the state, exists only as a geographic region, there is not a county government. Many of the individual townships operate their own distinct departments of Veterans’ Services. These departments advocate for local veterans, their spouses, and dependents, helping them secure the benefits that they are entitled to on the state and local level.  For further assistance, veterans of Franklin County may contact the State Office of Veterans’ Services.

The VA operates a community-based outpatient clinic in Greenfield. The clinic offers Franklin County Veterans health and wellness services. The facility provides primary care, treatment of chronic and non-emergency medical conditions and immunizations, mental health care, including diagnostic evaluations, psychotherapy services, and referral to community resources. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is treated on an outpatient basis to veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The clinic functions on the basis of scheduled appointments. Veterans can set up an appointment by calling the clinic toll-free to speak with a representative.

Disabled veterans living in Franklin County, who own property, are potentially entitled to a property tax exemption. Veterans who suffer from a service-connected disability rating of 10 percent are entitled to an exemption of $400. The exemption amount increases to $750 if the veteran lost the use of one eye, foot, or hand. Veterans who have lost the use of both hands, feet or eyes are entitled to an exemption of $1,250. Veterans who are completely disabled may receive an exemption of $1,000.

The county honor veterans with the War Memorial at Veterans Memorial Mall. At the forefront of the memorial is a bronze serpentine depicting the history of twentieth-century warfare. The main theme of the memorial is peace.
