Franklin County is located on the southern edge of Idaho. Rich in history, Franklin County was officially established by the Idaho State Legislature in 1913. The county encompasses a total area of 668 square miles, 664 miles of which is land, and 4.7 miles of which is water. Franklin County was named after an Apostle of the Church of Latter-Day Saints, Franklin D. Richards. The several national protected areas make Franklin County a great destination for nature lovers. Many Nationally Registered Historic Places can be found in Franklin County. The Oneida Stake Academy was constructed in 1895 and still stands in the town of Preston. Oneida Stake Academy was built as a secondary school for the Church of Latter-Day Saints. Other historical sites in Franklin County include the Bear River Battleground, Relic Hall, and Weston Canyon Rock Shelter.
Since most of the film Napoleon Dynamite was filmed in Franklin County, they host a “Napoleon Dynamite Festival” each year. The festival features a Tetherball Tournament, Tater Tot Eating Contest, Look-a-Like Contest, and much more. People from all over the country attend the Napoleon Dynamite Festival. Another fun annual event in Franklin County is the Festival of Lights. The Festival of Lights is a midway celebration between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The festival features beautiful lights, fireworks, and a parade!
