The Georgia General Assembly officially created Evans County on November 3, 1914. The county was named for former Georgia state senator, Clement A. Evans. Known as the “Fruitcake Capitol of the World,” the county seat of Claxton is famous for its creation of the Claxton Fruit Cake. The Claxton Bakery and The Georgia Fruitcake Company produce and export plenty of the sweet treat daily.
