Created in 1858, Echols County was named after an American politician and soldier named Robert Milner Echols. The current population is 4,003, and the veteran population is 292, making it one of the least-populated areas in Georgia. Echols County is great for those looking for a quiet area to settle down.
The county seat of Statenville was named for Captain James W. Staten, who built the first store in Statenville. Over 90% of the county is woodland, which makes the county an excellent place for hunting and camping. Agriculture and forestry have historically been the biggest industries in Echols County because of the vast forests.
Janice Daugharty, a famous author, and John Wesley Langdale, a successful businessman, are both from Echols County.
Echols County has two rivers flowing through it, the Alapaha and the Suwannee. The rivers make the county a great place for fishing, boating, and swimming.
