With a population of less than 20,000 Dukes County is the second least populated county in the state of Massachusetts. Despite its small size, the County is significant as the location of the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Nicknamed Hollywood East, because of its reputation as a summertime haven for celebrities, the island boasts of several beautiful beaches and lighthouses. Martha’s Vineyard offers residents and tourists horseback riding, charter fishing, golfing, kite flying, bicycling and hiking options. The island is also the home of the amateur baseball team, the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks, who play home games at Vineyard Baseball Park.Broken up into six distinct towns, Aquinnah, Chilmark, Oak Bluffs, Tisbury, and Edgartown, several restaurants, art galleries and the museums dot the island.
In addition to the Vineyard, Chappaquiddick Island, and the Elizabeth Islands also fall within the boundaries of Dukes County. Edgartown is both the county seat and largest town. The original inhabitants of the area were Wampanoag Indians, who had several villages throughout the islands. Settler Thomas Mayhew purchased the county in 1641 from British nobles and maintained unimpeded native governments. The county was officially formed in 1695.
The islands have a natural scenic beauty. The Nomans Land Island National Wildlife Refuge, which is encompassed by the county, prominently displays the outdoor allure of the area. The Refuge is a wildlife habitat and is especially important to many guilds of birds. Bird species that make their home here include seabirds, waterfowl, songbirds, raptors, and marsh birds. During the hottest months, double crest cormorants and Virgina Rails migrate to the habitat.
