Officially founded in 1803, the county developed as a highly profitable farming area. By 1810, the population grew to just under 4,000, and by 1870 to 15,000. During the late nineteenth century, the county was valued at $5 million, as farm productivity per acre was comparable to contemporary Illinois. The White Mountains and Presidential Mountain Range falls within the boundaries of the county. The county covers the portions of three National protected areas; the Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge, Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge, and the White Mountain National Forest.

The county was the subject of the Robert Frost poem The Witch of Coos. It was also the setting of the John Irving novel Last Night in Twisted River.

Veterans in Coos County

Coos County has a long history of American military contributions. During the Revolutionary War, Whitcomb’s Rangers, and Bedel’s Regiment were both made up of Coos County settlers. The county maintains a staunch patriotism to this day, and very much embodies the official motto of the state “live free or die.”

With a veteran population of 3,200, Coos County has the fewest veterans living within it out of all ten New Hampshire counties. Despite the limited population, the VA maintains the Berlin Vet Center in the county. Located in Gorham, the center offers readjustment counseling to veterans and their families. Specializing in trauma issues as they pertain to sexual abuse and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, the center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Upon special request, the center will remain open and provide services after hours and during weekends.

Additionally, local veterans can access services by contacting the State Office of Veterans Services.  The mission of the office is to help veterans who reside in the state, as well as their dependents in securing any and all benefits that are afforded to them by state and federal law.

Veterans who own property in Coos County qualify for tax credits or a property tax exemption under several circumstances. Veterans who served during wartime for a minimum of 90 days, and their surviving spouses are entitled to a tax credit of $50. A tax credit ranging between $700 and $2,000 is available to the widow of a veteran killed while serving. Permanently disabled veterans who suffer from a service-connected double amputation, or paraplegia are entitled to a tax credit of $700. If a permanently disabled veteran had a home specially adapted or constructed through the VA, they are exempt from the entirety of taxation on the homestead.
