Named for Civil War General Phillip Cook, Cook County was created on November 5, 1918. Cook County was the 153rd county created in Georgia. Cook County is made up of a total surface area of 233 square miles, 227 square miles of which is land and 6 square miles of which is water. The current population of Cook County is 17,214 including a veteran population of 1,147.
Reed Bingham State Park has several recreation facilities that are fun for people of all ages. The main attraction of the park is a 400-acre lake, which gives it great opportunities for fishing, boating, swimming, and more. For those that love camping, Reed Bingham State Park features several campsites, picnic shelters, and nature trails. The park also hosts an annual Easter Egg Hunt and a Fishing Rodeo.
Cook County is home to several annual festivals that bring out most of the community. The Lean-Ox Festival is a celebration of the Cook County community. The festival features food vendors, arts and crafts, and a street dance. Other festivals in Cook County include the Brushy Creek Muzzleloaders Spring Shot and the Annual Turnip Trot.
There are a number of places listed on the National Register of Historic Places located in Cook County. The Cook County Courthouse and the SOWEGA Building were both built in the 1930s.
