Clark County is known for Las Vegas, perhaps even the entirety of Nevada is known for Las Vegas, though, like the state, the county is much more than just gaming and entertainment. Formed in 1909 by the state legislature, Clark County was created when Lander County was reapportioned. The county has a significant place in this country’s public transit history. Named after Montana senator William Andrews Clark, whose biggest claim to fame was the role he played in the construction of the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad. Clark championed having a stop in Las Vegas, probably changing the fate of the city forever.

Located at the southeastern tip of Nevada, Clark County is the most populated county in the entire state. In fact, more than 75% of the state’s population lives in within the county limits. The highly condensed number of residents is largely due to the county seat of Las Vegas.  The city of Las Vegas is home to nearly 600,000 residents while the entire metropolitan area of Las Vegas has nearly two million people living in it.

Because of the popularity of Las Vegas housing in the Clark County area is slightly more expensive than surrounding counties. Most homes are less than two decades old and all have modern amenities. Although there is usually less land available with home sites in the county, there is a surplus of available housing to be found within Clark County. Condominiums are plentiful in the region, as well as specialty units such as those reserved for retired individuals or couples who are looking for a beautiful and functional home without the normal maintenance required. Likewise, plenty of townhome communities are available for growing families or first time homebuyers who want to test the waters of home ownership. Townhomes are located throughout affordable and secure neighborhoods, while single family housing developments have always been popular for Las Vegas residents, with new sub-divisions created seemingly annually. As the area continues its current growth spurt, more options may also become available. However, the prices may increase to meet or even exceed the national average.

Veteran homeowners are eligible for property tax exemptions. For those with a continuous 90 days served, an annual exemption of $1,250 is available. Disabled Veterans may qualify for up to $12,500 in exemptions, with surviving spouses also being eligible under certain circumstances.

Despite the seemingly endless stream of people coming and going, the cost of living in Clark County is still less than the national average  Generally speaking, a two-bedroom condominium can be purchased for less than $85,000 and a single family home in a relatively new development is usually priced for about $100 per square foot. The Henderson Area is growing rapidly, but still has the best prices for new homes listed throughout Clark County.

In addition to the multi-faceted dynamics of the social atmosphere and tourism, Clark County is also a great place for active military personnel and veterans to settle in as permanent or semi-permanent residents. The Nevada Office of Veterans Services provides locals with a great group of organizations that work together on behalf of the community. The Nevada Veterans Assistance League works with veterans to ensure a smooth transition to civilian life, assisting veterans in succeeding when tasked with the variable set of circumstances that arise from the conclusion of service. The Nevada Veterans Assistance Program has been instrumental in creating an increased quality of life specifically for military staff and their families throughout the region. The Nevada State Veterans Home provides high quality care for elderly or disabled veterans and qualified family members. Veterans further benefit by the presence of the VA Hospital in North Las Vegas.

One of the most well-known structures to be found within the county is the Nellis Air Force Base, which is located just about seven miles northeast of Las Vegas. This magnificent base includes over 15,000 miles of airspace and is often referred to as a city within a city. Along with the constantly active training missions conduced on site, the base also offers public facilities designed for retired military personnel, and sports areas targeted to local youth.   A complete listing of training events is usually published for community awareness, since these can occur 24 hours per day.

The Army National Guard also has a strong presence in Nevada, especially throughout the Clark County region. Much of the utilities and power provided to the almost 900,000 residents outside the city limits are supplied using alternative energy techniques developed by the Guard. No small feat, the renewable energy sources are cutting money spent on both social services and utility providers by a greater percentage each year. This has proven to be both energy and cost efficient for residents and the local government. As a result of these efforts, the military personnel throughout the region are strongly supported and respected.
