About Clackamas County

Named after the original inhabitants of the area, Clackamas County, Oregon was established in 1843 and was at one point big enough that it covered parts of several states. Eventually, in 1844 the Columbia River became its northern boundary. However, in 1846 the county was shrunk event further and in 1854 it became what it is today encompassing 1,879 square miles.

Today, the county has a very diverse economy with agriculture, timber, manufacturing, and tourism all playing a role in the modern economy. The biggest employment industries in the county include healthcare, manufacturing, and retail. Hence, the most common jobs in the county are administrative, management, and sales-related occupations.

The county is also home to the Mt. Hood Economic Alliance Grants and Revolving Loan Fund, which offers grants and loans to qualifying businesses. Moreover, priority is given to businesses that create and retain jobs, leverage outside capital investment, are sustainable, support minorities, and pays workers an average wage that is higher than the county minimum wage.

Educationally speaking, the county is home to around 108 public schools that provide education for students pre-K to 12th grade. In addition, the county is also home to several higher education institutions like Clackamas Community College, Pioneer Community College, and Marylhurst University. Furthermore, the most common concentrations for students at these institutions are liberal arts, food services, and business administration.

Finally, the county is home to 22 city parks which includes Clackamette Park that has an RV camping area, skateboard park, and several other recreational facilities.
