Churchill County Nevada homes for sale

The 2019 $0 down, VA home loan limit for Churchill County is $484,350.

Just as Sylvester Churchill was a distant relative of famed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Churchill County is of distant relation to Brigade General Sylvester Churchill. The county, which was established in 1861, was named after Fort Churchill (the namesake of the aforementioned officer). Originally, the fort served to provide the settlers of the area with protection, as well as a pony express mail route. During the Civil War, the fort would serve the Union Army as a crucial supply depot. In the early 19th century, Churchill County became somewhat of a renegade territory. At the time, there were attempts to dissolve the sparsely populated region and have it absorbed into neighboring areas. Although small, the county proved feisty. Assemblymen Lemuel Allen passionately defended Churchill County, going so far as to argue the Governor into vetoing a bill that would have revoked Churchill of its sovereign standing.

Thanks to Lemuel Allen, there are currently about 25,000 people who call this northwestern Nevada County home.
