The history of Cheshire County begins with the largest city and county seat of Keene. Originally known as Upper Ashuelot, Keene was settled in 1735 by 63 settlers who paid Colonial Governor Jonathan Belcher five pounds apiece for properties assigned by lot. Meant to serve the Massachusetts Bay Province as a fort during The Seven Years War, the area was integrated into New Hampshire from Massachusetts in 1741. The community was burned by Indians during King George’s War and rebuilt in the early 1750s. At this point, it was renamed Keene after Benjamin Keene, a diplomat and British ambassador to Spain.
Located on a seemingly pre-historic lake, engulfed by hills and an abundance of meadows, Cheshire County extends for 729 square miles, covering 23 towns, the southwestern section of the state. Home to Mount Monadnock, the busiest mountain in the world in terms of hiking annually, and Pisgah State Park, the largest state park in New Hampshire, there is never a lack of activity in Cheshire County. In a humid continental climate, the county undergoes all four seasons, with the fall foliage being the most stunningly beautiful trait of the county.
Keene is a minor college town, home to both Keene State College and Antioch University New England.

Cheshire County has a veteran population of roughly 7,000. Of the ten counties in New Hampshire, five have larger veteran populations. The majority of local vets make their primary residences in the city of Keene. Multiple VA organizations operate within Keene, serving all veterans who call Cheshire County home. The Keene Outpatient Clinic offers numerous services aimed at improving the quality of life and healthfulness of local veterans. The clinic offers primary care, women’s health services including PAP smears, contraception, and exams. Additionally, veterans can access minor dermatologic procedures, preventative services, X-rays, medications, EKG and mental health care at the community clinic. The practice operates Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Evening appointments can be scheduled on Wednesday’s.
The Keene Vet Center Outstation offers further mental health care to area veterans. Open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. the center works with veterans in need of readjustment counseling. The center makes an effort to remain open after normal working hours and on weekends for veterans who request these times. The center specializes in counseling for veterans suffering from trauma or sexual abuse.
Veterans who own property in Cheshire County potentially qualify for either tax credits or a property tax exemption. Veterans who served during wartime and their wives or surviving spouses are eligible to receive a property tax credit of $50. The surviving spouse of a veteran killed during service is eligible for a property tax credit between $700 and $2000. Veterans suffering from a service-related, permanent disability qualify for a property tax credit of $700. In the event that a permanently disabled veteran’s primary residence was specially adapted with the assistance of the Department of Veterans Affairs, they are completely exempt from property taxes.
