Situated in the mid-state Lakes Region of New Hampshire, Belknap County is historically significant for the Abenaki Indian Settlement called Acquadocton Village. The original European settlers who journeyed through Belknap County discovered it while in search of the Canadian lakes and rivers of Indian folklore. As a result of ongoing hostilities between the French and English, the formation of a permanent settlement around Fort Laconia was delayed for many years. Following the conclusion of the French and Indian War a settlement was finally established in 1761. The construction of lumber and grist mills brought about an expanded population. Belknap County was officially formed and incorporated into the state in 1855. The county is the namesake of Jeremy Belknap, an American clergyman and historian who is best known as the author of the three volume encyclopedia History of New Hampshire.
Belknap County has a total area of 469 square miles, making it the second-smallest county in New Hampshire by area. The largest city and county seat is Laconia.
Perhaps the most notable aspect of the county is the partial presence of Lake Winnipesaukee. The largest lake in New Hampshire, containing more than 258 islands, the lake is a huge summertime tourist draw for residents of Boston and New York City. Interestingly, the lake was the site of the first intercollegiate sporting event in the history of the United States. Harvard defeated Yale in 1852 at the Harvard-Yale Regatta. The centennial of this event was held in 1952, when Harvard again bested Yale.
